Pre-development testing was undertaken on the site of proposed developments in Knockacroghery, Castlebar, Co. Mayo, in February 1998. Half of the proposed development site lies within the designated archaeological area of Castlebar town.
It appears that over the years some topsoil has been removed from the development site and that some modern rubble and fill has been dumped onto it.
Eight test-trenches were excavated by machine. No archaeological features or small finds were recovered from any of the trenches.
