Monitoring of soil removal was carried out on 11 April 1998 in advance of the erection of a horse exercise unit at Carrowbeg, Swinford, Co. Mayo. The site lies just north and north-north-west of a univallate rath, which is situated on a drumlin, at least 3.8m above the level of the field at north.
Removal of soil, to a maximum depth of 0.65m, showed stony clay of varying thickness overlying gravel.
Nothing of archaeological significance was revealed in the monitoring.
