The site at Park Street underwent archaeological assessment in advance of a proposed commercial development. The site lies within the former walled area of Dundalk.
Two test-trenches were excavated. Trench 1 was 13.8m long and was orientated north-west to south-east, perpendicular to Park Street. At the north-west end of the trench concrete 0.1m thick overlay sandy gravel in the base of the trench at 1.4m below ground level. At c. 6m south-east of the footpath a layer of sandy, red brick rubble containing 19th/20th-century pottery extended to a depth of 0.8m. This overlay a grey-green, silty clay with shell, animal bone and local medieval pottery.
Trench 2 was parallel to Trench 1 and was 15m long and 1.2m wide. A layer of red brick rubble 0.2m thick overlay brown loam with red brick fragments. This overlay a layer of yellow, sandy gravel, which contained large quantities of stone and was sterile. This extended to the base of the trench at 1.2m deep.
