Unlicensed monitoring of topsoil-stripping along Line 1 of the Dundalk Sewerage Scheme began on 12 November 1998 and continued until 14 December. Monitoring was recommended as the general area forms part of the zone of archaeological potential recognised by the Urban Survey and the Urban District Council and contains a wide variety of archaeological remains, from an Early Bronze Age cist burial to a 15th-century tower-house.

To date, only one site of archaeological significance (a fulacht fiadh) has been exposed in the course of topsoil-stripping. This was excavated in December 1998 (see No. 447, Excavations 1998). Soil-stripping is due to recommence and be completed in early 1999.
