Testing was carried out in advance of the construction of a two-storey dwelling-house. The site lies on the eastern bank of the River Nore. There is a very substantial drop, c. 4m, from the site's present ground level to the river.
Two test-trenches were opened with the aid of a mechanical digger. Testing on the site had to be abandoned, and all site works have been deferred to mid-1999. This was due to the depth of built-up material (building rubble and debris) that had been imported onto the site. It was not possible to extend beneath the level of this material (it was at least 3m deep) or to determine whether archaeological remains survived beneath the rubble fill or the level of natural subsoils.
It is the intent of the owner of the site to carry out further pre-construction testing work with a larger machine and to establish the soil profile beneath the rubble fill. Further archaeological investigative work will be carried out sometime during 1999.
