An archaeological assessment took place in August 1998 for a proposed development of an apartment block on a site in the centre of the city on the north bank of the River Nore. The assessment consisted of a detailed photographic record of the extant upstanding walls and three linear test-trenches.
In Trench 1 a large medieval ditch was found, aligned approximately east-west and 1.1m deep. It lay up against the street frontage in the southern portion of the site and probably represented part of the town defences of the medieval walled city. The southern edge of the ditch and several deposits filling the ditch were identified, the lowest containing medieval pottery and bone. An upper fill was also recorded containing later medieval/post-medieval finds. This layer was also revealed in the second trench to the north, where it was cut by a limestone well.
Post-medieval layers were revealed at the east of the site, associated with a substantially truncated and reworked building fronting the street and a second building fronting the alley to the east. The foundations of the latter were found to rest on boulder clay. It appeared that all stratigraphy associated with the floor of this building had been removed. A possible third building stood in the northern corner of the property.
The eastern corner of the site revealed natural sands and gravel at a high level sealed by a thin layer of garden soil. The walls to the rear and east of the property were post-medieval and early modern in date.
Further excavation and detailed building recording were recommended.
