On behalf of Bord Gáis Éireann, and within the zone of archaeological potential recognised in the Urban Archaeology Survey for Johnstown, a gas pipe was laid along the main street and parallel to the site of the medieval church, font fragment and graveyard. The installation of the gas pipeline over a distance of 100m in this area was carried out using the trenchless technology system of the compressor-driven mole type. This system necessitated the use of a small number of narrow trench slits (1800mm long, 800mm wide and 900mm deep) in the roadway, to allow the insertion and later removal of the mole rods. No archaeological deposits or features came to light in the course of this work.
