Monitoring of groundworks was undertaken on 24–5 August 1998 at a site at Castlereban South, Athy, Co. Kildare. The work was undertaken in compliance with a condition attached to the grant of planning to develop a playing field and associated structures by Castlemitchell GAA. The site measures c. 130m x 140m, and groundworks associated with the development included the stripping of topsoil in the area of the proposed buildings and carpark, the removal of a field boundary and the reduction of ground levels over a high area of the proposed playing field.
No features of archaeological interest were discovered during the course of this work, but several sherds of medieval pottery were recovered from the topsoil.
