This project involved the monitoring of ground disturbance associated with the development of three apartments on first-floor level with parking and toilet facilities at ground-floor level, at North Gate Street, Athenry, Co. Galway.
The removal of a modern concrete surface revealed a cobbled stone surface at the north end of the site. Measuring 7.5m long and 3m wide, these cobbles indicated the original ground surface of a shed. The cobbles comprised rounded limestone laid on a bed of sand. A 20th-century date for this surface was confirmed by the discovery of pottery underneath the cobbles. No further features or artefacts of archaeological significance were encountered during monitoring.
