This site was identified as a series of burnt spreads by Colin Gracie during monitoring of topsoil-stripping of the South-Eastern Motorway (see No. 121, Excavation 1998). A two-week excavation was conducted at the beginning of November, and the spreads were defined more fully. They consisted of deposits of burnt stone with some charcoal and several pits also filled with burnt stone and clay. No archaeological materials were recovered, and there was no indication of a trough. Several soil samples were taken for analysis, and results are awaited.
