Archaeological trial-trenching was undertaken at a proposed development to the rear of 10 Main Street, Lucan, on 6 September 1998. The work was undertaken in compliance with a request from the Planning Authority for additional information in respect of the proposed development.
The site lies within the medieval manorial borough of Lucan, which is believed to have been established a short time after the Anglo-Norman invasion. The street-plan of the borough was essentially linear, and the modern Main Street is on the site of its medieval predecessor.
Three trial-trenches were excavated by hand. Two cobbled surfaces were uncovered, separated by a layer of silty sand that had a maximum thickness of 370mm. The upper cobbled surface is clearly associated with the existing premises. Investigation of the lower cobbled surface indicated that it was not truncated by the foundations associated with the present structure, indicating that it was also associated with the existing premises. It appears that the garden area was raised at some time in the past, and this is demonstrated by the fact that the present yard surface is c. 300mm above that of the internal ground-floor level of the existing building.
No features, structures or finds of archaeological interest were uncovered during the testing.
