The site occupies an area measuring a maximum of 70m north-south by 40m and fronts onto Wolfe Tone Street to the east and Jervis Lane Upper to the west. Four trenches were excavated to subsoil using a mechanical excavator.
Large cellars up to 4m deep occurred beneath the demolished building that had formerly fronted onto Wolfe Tone Street, while cellars up to 3m deep occurred beneath the buildings that formerly fronted onto Jervis Lane. All of the cellars were cut deeply into subsoil and were backfilled with 19th- and 20th-century material.
In the areas between the former buildings subsoil occurred at 2–2.5m below modern ground level and was overlain by layers of loam and rubble containing 18th- and 19th-century pottery, bricks and other refuse.
