An assessment was conducted at 15/16 Werburgh Street, Dublin 8, over three days in March 1998, before development. The medieval town wall and the River Poddle run through the site. The objective of the assessment was to ascertain the exact line of the wall and Poddle culvert. Two trenches, both oriented north-south, were excavated by a 1m-wide bucket of a mechanical digger.
The assessment was inconclusive as there is over 3m of rubble, overburden and friable soils on the site. The trenches were unsafe and continually collapsed. The assessment was abandoned. It is proposed to undertake further assessment in 1999.
