An assessment was carried out at a site bounded by Spitalfields and Mark's Alley West. It extends more than halfway through the block towards Francis Street, with access from Carmen's Hall. The site was investigated in two phases. Phase I was completed in February 1998, when three trenches were opened by mechanical excavator, and Phase II in September 1998, when four trenches were excavated.
The site lies immediately outside the medieval walled town of Dublin. Francis Street takes its name from the Friary of St Francis (founded 1233), which stood on the east side of the street, close to or on the site of the modern Catholic church of St Nicolas of Myra.
The initial 2m of stratigraphy consisted of loose late building remains infilling red brick cellars over a brown clay deposit. A post-medieval refuse pit, uncovered at a depth of 2.2m in Trench B, yielded two sherds of post-medieval, red-glazed eastern ware and one medieval body sherd of local ware. There was no evidence of any archaeological features.
