An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at a development site at 51–52 Mary Street, Dublin 1, on 3 and 6 July 1998. The work was undertaken in compliance with a condition attached to the grant of planning in respect of the proposed development of the site.
The site lies in the general environs of St Mary's Abbey, a Cistercian establishment that dates to 1139 and that appears to have been affiliated to Savigny in Normandy. This abbey had lands in its immediate vicinity, but there is no evidence to indicate that the present site lies within the boundaries of such lands.
Five trenches were mechanically excavated. No features, structures or finds of archaeological interest were uncovered during the course of the evaluation, although it is possible that such material may have existed on the site before the construction of the existing basements.
Given the archaeologically sterile nature of the site, it was recommended that no further archaeological involvement was required in respect of the development.
