Monitoring of substructural groundworks, including excavation for lift shafts, was carried out on 9–10 March 1998 in accordance with a condition of the planning permission. Owing to the relatively shallow depth of the ground-beams and lift shaft bases excavation did not proceed beyond disturbed red brick rubble remains contained within a sandy, brown clay with late mortar inclusions. There was no evidence of any material of an archaeological nature.
