Two test-pits were hand-excavated in the basement of an upstanding 18th/19th-century building to provide information on the likely survival of archaeological remains before a decision on an application for planning permission for a mixed commercial and residential development on this site. The site is directly opposite that of the the Augustinian Friary of The Holy Trinity, part of which has recently excavated by Linzi Simpson (Excavations 1996, 20–1, 96E0003). Fownes Street was laid out in the 18th century.
The floor of the basement is c. 2m below street level. No archaeological remains were uncovered in the two pits excavated; undisturbed natural gravels were found in both. It appears that any archaeological remains that formerly existed on this site have been removed.
It is recommended that a watching brief be maintained during ground reduction for the proposed development.
