The site lay to the north of the 13th-century Augustinian friary, parts of which (the east precinct wall, part of the south precinct wall, internal walls and a limekiln) were found in previous excavations (Excavations 1996, 20–1, 96E0003). The northern end or return of the east precinct wall was not found during those excavations, and it was thought it may have extended into the south-east corner of the site under discussion. However, no wall was found in this additional assessment (to that reported on in Excavations 1997, 43), the site forming part of the extensive reclamation in this area dating to c. 1600.
