Pre-development testing was carried out in the area of a proposed domestic dwelling between Nos 57 and 58, The Coombe, Dublin. Excavation was by mechanical digger, using a toothless bucket.

Owing to upstanding buildings on either side of the area, it was decided, for safety, to excavate a narrow trench centrally placed between the two buildings. The trench was excavated to a depth of 51.86m OD (1.7m below present ground surface) through modern overburden, to the top of an active sewer pipe. Excavation beyond this point was not possible.
