The site lies to the rear of the Iveagh Hostel. Permission has been granted for the construction of an extension to the hostel. The site is within the zone of archaeological potential of Dublin; under a condition of the planning permission the Iveagh Trust was required to have test-trenching carried out in advance of construction. A single trench, 19m long, was excavated by mechanical digger to a maximum depth of 2.6m on the site of the proposed extension.
A charcoal-flecked, brown, silty clay was found over the northern 8m of the trench. Eight sherds of medieval pottery were found in this layer. The medieval layer has been cut away by 19th-century activity in the southern part of the trench. The layer containing the medieval pottery is 1m below the proposed finished floor level of the extension and will not be affected by the proposed development.
A small excavation will be carried out in early 1999 to further investigate the medieval soils found in this assessment.
