The development site is in the immediate vicinity of SMR 6:38, a castle site that is thought to have stood close to 12 Pembroke Road (Kelly, D., Four roads to Dublin 1996, 35). The castle was the chief residence of the manor of Baggotrath and is believed to have been constructed in the early 14th century. It was partly destroyed in 1649 and was later attacked again. No attempt was made to restore the castle following these events, and the expansion of the city of Dublin in the 19th century required the removal of the castle remains.
Monitoring of groundworks was undertaken in May 1998 at the site of a proposed two-storey mews house at Baggot Lane, to the rear of 9 St Mary's Road. Four foundation trenches up to 1.5m deep were excavated, initially by hand and later by mechanical digger, within an area formerly used as a garden. The foundation trenches revealed a sequence of black soil containing red brick and cinder (0–0.4m), mottled, orange clay containing stones (0.4–0.9m), and grey-brown, compact clay (0.9–1.5m+). The development did not expose or remove any features or artefacts of archaeological significance.
