Two trenches were opened up, one upslope (west) of the tower-house and one downslope of it. The former found the area to have been disturbed in the last century by the construction of drains, although there were indications that an early road ran east-west adjacent to the north side of the structure. The downslope trench exposed the remains of a medieval wall separating the grounds from the road to the north. Nearby was a substantial pit, which was filled with stone chippings and mortar, as well as part of a scalloped piscina.
