Pre-development archaeological testing was undertaken in September 1998 in accordance with planning conditions for the construction of eight new houses around a central yard/carpark at the eastern end of Ross Carbery town close to the harbour. Topsoil removal and excavation of foundation trenches were subsequently monitored in early November.
The site was an undeveloped area of parkland with occasional trees, associated with the former Ross College (Academy) adjacent to St Fachtna's Cathedral. The area is close to the site of the ancient ecclesiastical foundation and to the possible line of the town wall. The Cork Archaeological Survey has suggested the likely location of the town wall, but the evidence of the existence of a later medieval wall remains equivocal.
No archaeological evidence of human occupation from any period was recorded in the course of the site testing and monitoring. A large deposit of building rubble, including stone, mortar, brick and slate, occurred over part of the site, and appears to have resulted from the dumping of the debris from the demolished College, which was burned in 1923 and replaced by a much smaller structure in 1926.
