Cork County Council and Midleton Urban Development Council propose to commence a major sewerage scheme in Midleton town in 1999. The scheme includes the construction of a new sewerage treatment plant, three submersible pumping stations and a storm tank, as well as laying new sewerage pipelines. The new treatment plant will be built south-west of Midleton adjacent to the Cork–Midleton dual carriageway. The routes of the pipelines are confined mostly to the southern and western areas of the town, and a relatively small section will extend into the archaeological constraint zone as defined by the Urban Archaeological Survey of County Cork. A storm tank and one of the submersible pumping stations will also be built within the designated area.
Site investigation works commenced in April 1998. Archaeological monitoring of trial holes along the proposed routes of the pipeline revealed no features or finds of significance. Construction work on the sewerage treatment plant and the various pumping houses is scheduled to commence in 1999. An archaeologist will be present to monitor the excavation of foundations and associated service trenches.
