The site lies in the centre of the medieval town of Kinsale and is overlooked to the north by St Multose Church. There was planning permission to demolish a large warehouse, in use as a bakery, that occupied the site. A photographic and descriptive survey of the building was carried out in advance of its demolition.
Following demolition, a site assessment consisting of two test-trenches was carried out on 3 January 1998. The trenches ran east-west along the site from the street front to the rear. Both were found to contain 19th/20th-century loose rubble fill to a depth of 0.5m. Below this was a layer of tightly packed soil (0.15m thick) containing tiny fragments of bone, brick, wood and stone. This lay on top of natural, yellow clay. No finds or features of archaeological significance were noted.
