Pre-development testing was carried out at the rear of No. 49 Abbey Street, Ennis, from 2 to 12 February 1998, in advance of a proposed housing development at the site. The site was directly adjacent to Ennis Friary in an archaeologically sensitive area within Ennis town.
Four trial-trenches were excavated manually. Three of these revealed a homogeneous stratigraphy comprising mainly garden soil coming down onto natural, undisturbed clay and bedrock. The fourth trench excavated revealed an unprecedented depth of mortar and debris, indicating its use as a dump in recent times. Nothing of archaeological significance was revealed.
