The decision was taken to permit a trench to be cut through the external bank and ditch on the north-west side of the monument in an attempt to determine its age and dimensions.
The trench was stepped as the ditch was found to be 4.7m deep, mostly filled with natural timbers and peat. At its base was a thin layer of grey silt containing the remains of a wooden bowl and two charred oak beams, one of which was dendro-dated to 95BC, similar to the central post in the 40m structure in the main mound.
