Archaeological monitoring of ground reduction for the raft foundation of a new office building at 5 Church Street, Wicklow, revealed the upper level of a probable medieval pit. As the development was not going to destroy the feature it was deemed sufficient, following consultation with DĂșchas, to record the feature without excavating it.

Part of a medieval stone mortar and three sherds of glazed hand-built local medieval pottery were found on the surface of the main fill of the pit as it was being cleaned prior to recording. Parallels for the mortar have been found in excavations of medieval strata in Waterford City. At least nine similar pits and other medieval features were found during previous excavations in advance of development of a site on the other side of Church Street (see Excavations 1997, Nos 620 and 621).
