Construction of a shop and apartment within the area of archaeological potential required archaeo-logical monitoring during ground disturbance. This was carried out between 20 June and 11 July. Foundation trenches at the western end of the site revealed three ditch-like features which cut into the natural subsoil. These were 1.6m wide and 0.3m deep; 1.88m wide and 0.4m deep; and 3.82m wide and 0.35m deep. In the upper section of one, a fragment of clay pipe stem was found but no other archaeological finds were observed, apart from a few fragments of cattle bone at the bottom of another ditch. All three ditches ran approximately east–west.
A trench for a connecting water-pipe was dug out into the street but no archaeological features were observed.
