Archaeological monitoring of Telecom Éireann pipe-laying took place from 24 October to 22 November.
One continuous trench was dug, using a mechanical digger, down College Street/Bishopsgate Street to the junction of Martin’s Lane. The trench was 0.5m wide and 1.5m deep. No finds of archaeological significance were recovered, although areas of modern domestic refuse, including ceramics and animal bones with butcher marks, were present. In many areas the fill of the trench was very mixed as a result of previous service pipe-laying.
The trench was also continued down Martin’s Lane. Here it was 1.5m wide and 1.5m deep. The fill was very mixed as a result of previous service pipe-laying. Animal bones, ceramics and an oyster shell were recovered and were considered to be related to non-archaeological food refuse.
