A series of test-pits were required by engineers planning the route of Interceptor Sewer N. 1 in Waterford. Nine of these, which were within the area of archaeological potential, were monitored. In most cases the ground proved to have been already disturbed by pipe-laying, and modern material such as brick was found. One pit in the grounds of the Court House had not been previously disturbed. Some fragments of brick and mortar were found here in the topsoil. Natural yellow subsoil was found 0.75m down, and grey river mud at 1.5m.
