Test excavations were undertaken in late September/early October 1997 in an area located between Bath Street and Quay Street, ahead of urban renewal development. The development site lies within Dungarvan’s zone of archaeological potential. Ten trenches were opened by machine and followed by hand-cleaning.
A number of pits and wall foundations were found throughout the site, all dating to the modern and post-medieval period except for a pit uncovered in Trench C, which contained a fragment of clay pipe stem, a sherd of medieval pottery and a nail. The potsherd was identified as a jug rim fragment made locally, probably in the 13th or 14th century.
The area in which the pit was found is situated in an intended green area of the proposed apartment development and will not be further affected by groundworks or services.
