Monitoring of topsoil removal in advance of pipe-laying was undertaken between August and November 1997. The pipeline corridor was on average 7m wide and ran east from Bunow Bridge, close to the County Offaly border, to the Roscrea sewerage works on the western outskirts of the town, a distance of c. 2.2km.

Topsoil from the corridor was mechanically stripped to an average depth of 0.4m. An examination of the natural subsoil and boulder clay below the topsoil horizon revealed drainage and agriculture-related features. Monitoring of the excavation of the foundation for a new holding tank as well as the removal of several pre-existing holding tanks on the eastern side of the sewerage works did not reveal anything of archaeological significance.
