A rescue excavation was undertaken when this feature was revealed during topsoil-stripping for a rock stockpile area.
A single isolated pit containing a single fragment of burnt bone and charcoal was revealed, cut into the subsoil. The pit was an irregular oval in plan and U-shaped/diagonal in profile, and measured 1m (east–west), 0.7m (north–south) and 0.41m in depth.
The site was located at the northern end of a raised plateau overlooking lowlands to the east, including Derryville Bog. The cemetery KIL:04 (No. 535 Excavations 1997) was also located on this plateau, 10m to the south.
