A rescue excavation was carried out when this site was revealed during topsoil-stripping for a rock stockpile area.
Two isolated small pits were cut into the subsoil. One pit (C1) contained a token cremation deposit of burnt bone fragments and charcoal; the second pit appeared to be an associated post-hole. C1 was circular in plan and U-shaped in profile, measuring 0.51m in diameter and 0.35m in depth. It cut an earlier post-pipe, 0.61m deep and 0.16m in diameter, suggesting that the post was marking a burial-plot.
The site was located at the southern extent of a raised plateau overlooking lowlands to the east, including Derryville Bog. The cemetery KIL:04 (No. 535, Excavations 1997) was also located on this plateau, 18m to the north.
