The following sites were excavated during 1997 as part of the mitigation of the proposed Tailings Management Facility (TMF) to be built as part of a lead and zinc mine by Minorco Lisheen Ltd.
The first group of sites (DER237, DER229, DER230, DER234, DER75, DER312 and DER315— Excavations 1997, Nos 517–523) were part of the north-west cluster originally recorded in a field survey carried out during the Project’s 1996 season in Killoran townland. The remaining sites in this cluster were excavated by John Ó Néill (see Excavations 1997, Nos 500–504). It was initially proposed to excavate thirteen sites. On investigation, eight of these turned out to be natural tree falls and were treated as non-archaeological. In addition, two new sites (DER312 [Excavations 1997, No. 522] and DER315 [Excavations 1997, No. 523]) were discovered during the field season. All of these sites are presented in chronological order.
The second group of sites (DER31 and DER325 [Excavations 1997, Nos 524–525]) were in Cooleeny townland in the southern section of the bog. Both sites were outside the impact zone of the TMF. They were excavated for research purposes in order to round out the project’s understanding of the bog as a whole. Initially it was planned to excavate one cutting of the site DER31 which was identified in the 1995 IAWU survey of the bog. DER325 was discovered during initial clearance for that cutting. These sites are also presented in chronological order.
