A small piece of ground at the north end of the present east range was excavated by hand to proposed foundation depth ahead of a small building extension within 10m of the circular tower, the keep of c. 1200. Excavation only reached the late 18th/early 19th-century ground level, the construction level for the south and east ranges in their present form.
A number of mortared walls were truncated at this level, including a medieval gable end of the east range. Construction levels for the walls are likely to be considerably lower, in a ditch around the keep (infilled in the 15th/16th century?).
