An assessment excavation was carried out on 15 September 1997 on behalf of Tipperary Co. Council in advance of road construction. The assessment involved the excavation of two trenches, both measuring 10m x 1.5m, in order to test for potential archaeological deposits. The assessment was carried out by machine, using a toothless bucket, under archaeological supervision.
Trench 1 was orientated north–south and Trench 2 was orientated east–west. In both trenches the subsoil varied from an orange compact clay to a yellow-buff stony clay. In Trench 2 it was overlain by a layer of naturally occurring orange silty clay that had a maximum depth of 0.27m. Above this, and above the subsoil in Trench 1, was a brown compacted loam topsoil. This had a maximum depth of 0.3m and contained modern debris such as metal drink cans and plastic. Nothing of archaeological importance was uncovered during the testing.
