A monitoring brief was carried out on the excavation of foundations on 24 July 1997. The results were similar to those noted in the initial site assessment (Excavations 1996, 97–8).

The undisturbed ground level sloped generally down from south-west to north-east towards the river. The overlying depth of organic fill varied between 0.8m and 1.5m. There was no indication in the exposed sections that significant archaeology was present. The deposit appeared relatively homogeneous from top to bottom. Towards the north, closest to the river, the lowest level was apparently more organic, but the previous interpretation that this represents natural riverine deposits still holds. The extra areas which were opened during the monitoring did not reveal anything further of archaeological significance.

Owing to the method of foundation excavation, only one of the three large foundation trenches was monitored, but it is unlikely that anything of significance would have been uncovered elsewhere.
