The assessment of this proposed development site, which is located on the south side of Abbey Street, to the south-west of Sligo Abbey, revealed evidence for in situ burials. These were located at the base of test-pits in the north-east and south-west of the development area. Overlying the burials was some 0.5m of ‘garden soil’, which contained significant quantities of disarticulated human bone. No evidence for basements was recorded along the Abbey Street frontage.
A suggested line for the abbey precinct is proposed, based on the assessment results and an examination of cartographic evidence. Further excavation is proposed for the area, to take place in 1998.
