Sligo County Council Planning Office, taking advice from the National Monuments Service, required that the site for a house at Farranyharpy, Co. Sligo, be archaeologically monitored on account of the density of archaeology in the area. Skreen monastic site (SMR 19:8) is less than 400m to the east and there are a number of ringforts close by. Excavation by the author, in the field to the west about 60m from this site, revealed nothing of archaeological significance (Excavations 1996, 97, 96E0239).

The initial field inspection gave no indication of any archaeology in the proposed development area. A total area of about 900m2 was opened by machine. The sod layer was nowhere more than 0.15m deep and generally was about half that depth. Beneath the sod there were several spreads of sand and gravel, either brought in to firm up access to the farm buildings or dumped during the construction of those buildings.

Beneath the sod was a rich reddish-brown soil, 0.15m to 0.25m in depth generally. In all of the area examined only one piece of modern crockery was found. There was no indication of anything other than natural soil over bedrock in the area monitored.
