Survey of the area adjacent to the development site was carried out in compliance with a planning condition in advance of construction of a mast and access road. SMR sites 21:27, 28, 29 and 30 are all located in close proximity to the development site.
Two linear features on the line of the proposed access road were noted during field-walking. These are not marked on any of the OS maps. A trench was opened across each of the linear features, on the line of the proposed road, in advance of construction. In addition two trenches were excavated on the site of the mast. The sod in the area of the trenches was removed by machine and the remainder of the work was done by hand. No archaeological stratigraphy, features or artefacts were uncovered or recorded in any of the trenches. The line of the access roadway was located along the line of the field fences and was 3m wide. It may account for why the linear features noted on the ground and visible on an aerial photograph were not discernible on the ground.
The excavation of the access roadway was monitored. The machine stripped the sod to a general depth of 0.04m. No archaeological stratigraphy or features were recorded at that depth. A fragment of a quernstone was recovered from the surface.
