An archaeological assessment of a proposed residential development was carried out at Cooltona, Portrunny, Co. Roscommon. The site of the proposed development lies close to a multi-period Transitional or Early Gothic church. This church lies within a graveyard and is all that remains of an Early Christian monastery that was connected with St Dermot, bishop of Longford and Roscommon.
Five trenches were excavated in the area of the proposed development. The boulder clay, which was quite rocky in places, was exposed at a consistent depth of 0.5m. The five trenches, which covered a good representative sample of the site, failed to reveal any archaeological stratigraphy. The only finds recovered came from the topsoil and consisted of sherds of post-medieval and modern pottery.
