The National Monuments Service recommended that the construction phase of the sewerage works in Banagher be monitored because some of the new sewerage lines occur within and close to the area of archaeological potential of Banagher as established by the Urban Archaeological Survey of County Offaly.
Monitoring commenced at the end of November and is continuing into 1998. Removal of topsoil from the way-leaves in the area of the treatment works and the pumping station was monitored. Work on the north-eastern end of the Lusmagh Road and Cuba Avenue has been completed. The trenches, in general, are 1m wide by 1–2m deep. No archaeological stratigraphy, features or artefacts have been recorded in the trenches or during topsoil-stripping to date.
