Licensed monitoring commenced at Mary Fealy’s shop, Mill Street, Monaghan town, on 13 October 1997 and was undertaken on behalf of the developer. Foundations were cut to a depth of 0.3m below the surface, revealing a reddish-brown layer with a substantial amount of building debris, including brick, mortar and stone. Also recovered were two incomplete rotary quernstones. On examination it appears more than likely that they are late in date and may be the top and base stone from the same quern.
A central trench for an underground tank, 3m long and 2.7m wide, was cut to a depth of 1.5m. The upper 0.5m were disturbed by the laying of central heating ducts, the foundation for the concrete steps, water mains, sewerage pipes and drains. Below this the area was relatively undisturbed, with a pit cut into the natural deposits.
