An archaeological assessment of a proposed residential development at Sutton Court, Seatown, Dundalk, Co. Louth, was carried out on 5 and 6 March 1997. The National Monuments Service, Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands, were not informed of the planning decision in advance, and so an archaeological condition could not be attached. Work temporarily ceased to allow an archaeologist to inspect the site. The site was opposite the location of an urban fortified medieval house and in the area of Anglo-Norman settlement. An examination of the excavated trenches revealed three walls, probably dating from the 18th/19th century. No evidence for medieval stratigraphy was recovered.
