Archaeological testing was carried out on a property in advance of a commercial development at the junction of Bessexwell Lane and Shop Street. This site is within the core of the medieval town and a dispute between burgesses over a partition wall in the 14th century is documented in connection with this area. Previous archaeological work in the lane revealed medieval deposits at a depth of 1m.
One T-shaped trench was opened, spanning the site. The first 0.8m consisted of red brick rubble which overlay a sticky clay containing charcoal fragments. At a depth of 0.94m a grey sticky clay layer was uncovered which yielded shell, bone and 13th-century pottery. Excavation ceased at this point.
