Archaeological testing was carried out in advance of a proposed apartment development at 11 North Quay/Bessexwell Lane, Drogheda, on 22 September 1997. The lane is a medieval street referred to since the 14th century as the ‘lane to the Friars Minor’, and the site probably lay close to the medieval riverfront.
Two trenches were excavated, one running north–south across the site and the second east–west. Both trenches were excavated to a depth of 1m. In Trench 1 a series of four parallel walls running east–west were located and were post-medieval in date. A dark brown medieval layer with local late medieval pottery underlay these features.
The second trench contained a disturbed layer containing red brick and mortar and was of a post-medieval date. This overlay the same medieval layer, which was not disturbed any further.
