An archaeological assessment of a proposed development at 9/10 George’s Street, Drogheda, Co. Louth, was carried out on 7 May 1997. The site is located on the west side of George’s Street, outside the town wall of medieval Drogheda. References have been made to a church of St Nicholas in this area outside the town and its precise location has not yet been established. The site was cleared of existing scrub, and sheds and buildings at the rear were demolished. Two trenches were excavated in the area of the proposed development, revealing that boulder clay existed at a depth of 0.4m to the south of the site and 0.75m at the north of the site.
The trenches did not reveal any evidence of archaeological stratigraphy, and the only finds recovered were sherds of black-glazed earthenware and fragments of glass bottles.
