Archaeological testing of a proposed housing development to the south of River Street, Carlingford, Co. Louth, was carried out on 30 January 1997. The site of the proposed development lies to the west of the town wall immediately outside the medieval town. The excavation of seven trenches at this site revealed that this site was devoid of archaeological stratigraphy. Natural gravels were exposed close to the surface and at a consistent depth. The site is on the east side of the Cooley Mountains and the steep slope from west to east may have prohibited any occupation in this area.
